### Common Core Standards:
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.1: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing.
- CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.1.2: Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
### Lesson Procedure:
#### Introduction (10 minutes):
1. **Hook**: Show a large picture card (e.g., a cat, a dog, a tree).
2. **Discussion**: Ask students to describe what's happening in the picture. Use guiding questions like, "What do you see in the picture?" and "What is the cat doing?".
3. **Purpose**: Introduce the objective: “Today, we are going to learn how to write simple sentences about the pictures we see.”
#### Direct Instruction (15 minutes):
1. **Teach**: Write a simple sentence on the board such as "The cat is sleeping."
2. **Break-down**: Explain that every sentence needs a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a verb (what the subject is doing).
- Subject: The cat
- Verb: is sleeping
3. **Punctuation**: Point out the capital letter at the beginning and the period at the end.
4. **Modeling**: Write another sentence with the students' help, such as "The dog is running."
- Ask for suggestions and guide them to construct the sentence properly.
#### Guided Practice (10 minutes):
1. **Interactive Writing**: Use sentence strips. Show a picture card and ask students to work with a partner to create a sentence and write it on the strip.
2. **Class Share**: Have pairs share their sentences with the class. Write a few on the board to discuss subject and verb.
#### Independent Practice (15 minutes):
1. **Worksheet Activity**: Distribute worksheets with several picture prompts. Students will write one simple sentence for each picture.
2. **Monitoring**: Circulate the room to assist students and provide feedback on their sentences.
#### Closing (10 minutes):
1. **Review and Recap**: Ask students to share some of their sentences. Discuss and correct any common mistakes together.
2. **Reinforcement**: Remind students about the key points – subject, verb, capital letter, and period.
3. **Exit Ticket**: Give students an index card and ask them to write one simple sentence about their favorite activity.
### Assessment:
- **Formative**: Observe student participation during guided practice, walk around during independent practice.
- **Summative**: Review the sentences on their worksheets and the exit ticket to assess their understanding of writing simple sentences.
### Extensions:
- **For Advanced Learners**: Encourage them to add an adjective to their sentences (e.g., The small cat is sleeping).
- **For Struggling Learners**: Work in small groups with additional picture prompts and guided writing with teacher support.
